Grand Piano Lamps: How do i choose among the many styles and models.
The first decision you should make when looking to purchase a lamp for your grand piano, is to choose between the two basic styles, that is: Grand Piano Lamps that clamp onto the music shelf, or Counter Balance Lamps that sits on the side of the music shelf and has a long adjustable arm that reaches over to the music.
Once you have decided between the two basic lamp styles, the next consideration is how much light do you want the lamp to produce. Most piano lamps provide plenty of light to clearly read the music, but some folks like more wattage and others like a little less. 40-60 watts is usually plenty of light, but you can get up to 120 watts if you like.
Also, different styles of lamps use different bulbs. Some use T10 bulbs which usually come in either 40w or 60w and throw more of a standard yellowish type of light, similar to that of a regular light bulb used in the home. Other lamps use flourescent bulbs which throw a whiter type of light. And still others use LED lighting technology with very long bulb life (20,000 - 100,000 hours). These lamps throw a warm white light with no glare.
