Adjustable Piano Benches
I was tuning a piano today and as i was working, the piano bench collapsed under me. Luckily I was not hurt, and fortunately for the customer, i have a great selection of piano benches on my website - Pianoscomplete.com. In my opinion, adjustable piano benches offer the most versatility and comfort. They allow you to adjust the height to exactly where you feel the most comfortable. All adjustable benches are padded for extra comfort and some models even have music compartments for storage of music books, sheetmusic and other small items. If you are in need of a piano bench, then choosing an adjustable piano bench would be your best option.

Upright Piano Lamp - P14-201
A good piano lamp will allow you to direct the light from the lamp where you need it. Many upright piano lamps have a double adjustment arm and a swivel shade. This allows the most flexibility in focusing the light. The biggest selling lamp for upright pianos is a lamp by House of Troy - model number P14-201. This lamp is a solid built (8 lbs) lamp with a 14" shade and a double adjustment arm. Easy on and off with a switch right on the front of the base. It has a beautiful polished brass finish, and is also available in a Mahogany Bronze Finish (P14-201-81). See this upright piano lamp and many more at Pianoscomplete.com

Piano Bench Cushions not only add comfort to your bench, but can also act as a booster for children. They are avaialble in 1" - 3" thicknesses, so they can actually raise the height of the player. Another approach to raising the player on the bench is to use a booster cushion which is meant to boost up the piano player. Booster cushions do not usually cover the entire length of the piano bench, so sometimes a thicker piano bench cushion is a better choice. Pianoscomplete.com has a big selection of Piano Bench Cushions with many designs and colors to choose from.

I have found the wittner portable quartz metronomes to be very useful. They are great for traveling because they fit just about anywhere, in a guitar case, sax case, etc. They have many features which i find helpful when practicing, such as variable beat and rhythm setting, and aural as well as visual LED beats.
Most of them come with an earphone in case you are playing your instrument louder than the sound of the metronome. See Wittner Quartz Metronomes at Pianoscomplete.com

Adjustable Piano Benches
If you are looking for a piano bench for your piano, you should consider purchasing an adjustable height bench. These benches offer you flexibility in that you can adjust the height to accomodate the size and preference of the player. Adjustable height benches usually adjust anywhere from 18" to 22" in height. This is a great feature for children because the height can be adjusted as they grow, which will enable them to attain the most comfortable playing position throughout their years as a piano player. These benches are also great for households that have more than one piano player since they can be adjusted for each individual musician. Adjustable benches are usually padded for extra comfort. Some of these benches also have music compartments for storage of sheet music, music books, and other small items. Adjustable piano benches are used on concert stages by professional musicians, in many Universities around the world, and have become very popular for use in the home as well.

If you are looking to purchase a used piano, you should never buy without hiring a piano technician to perform an inspection. You cannot tell if a piano is a good instrument just by looking at it. I have had many customers who purchased pianos based on looks, only to find out that they needed hundreds or even thousands of dollars worth of repair work. It is worth the minimal fee that a piano technician will charge to inspect a piano. It may save you a lot of money as well as saving you the trouble of dealing with a piano in poor condition. For more info on piano maintenance, or to contact a piano technician in central NJ, visit Rick's Piano Tuning at Pianoscomplete.com

If your child is advancing fast on the piano, and is beginning to use the pianos pedals but can not reach them, you should check out a pedal extender. A pedal extender is basically an adjustable height platform with 2 pedals on it. You place the platform over the actual piano pedals, and adjust the height to a comfortable level for your child. What this does is to allow the student to work the pedals without having to reach for them. Visit Pianoscomplete.com to see a few different piano pedal extenders.
As a piano owner, you should have maintenance work done (in addition to tuning) every so often to your instrument. This may include regulation of the action, cleaning of the action and strings, action lubrication and tightening, cleaning the soundboard (grand piano), as well as other repair and maintenance procedures. Also, you should take the proper steps to care for the cabinet and keys. You have to be careful when using cleaning and polishing products on a piano. Pianos have various finishes, and you need to use cleaners that are formulated for specific finishes. For example, if you have a high gloss finish (shiny finish), you should use a cleaner such as Cory High Gloss Piano Polish. For cleaning keys (plastic, wood, ivory) use the Key Polish by Cory for best results.

Balance Arm Piano Lamps
It is important to recognize that proper lighting is essential when playing, practicing, or performing at the piano. It is for this reason that House of Troy makes an entire line of lamps that are specially designed for use on pianos. These lamps allow flexibility in directing the light exactly where you need it, on the music and the piano keys, and have a whole list of other features that make them perfect for use on pianos. They are solidly built, offer flexibility in directing light, come in many models, styles, and designs, and many are lightweight and portable, allowing musicians to transport them to performances and rehearsals.
One popular design is the Balance Arm Lamp, also called a Counter Balance lamp. These piano lamps work on both grand and upright pianos. They can be placed on either side of the piano, and have a shade which is attached to a long adjustable arm that reaches over to illuminate the music.
When looking to purchase a balance arm lamp, you should first consider a few things to make sure you choose a lamp that will meet your needs. First to consider is the amount and type of light a balance arm lamp throws. Some lamps use a T10 incandescent bulb available in either 40 or 60 watts. This light is similar to the light you get from a regular household light bulb. Both 40 and 60-watt T10 bulbs provide sufficient light to clearly read your music, so choosing between them is more a matter of personal preference as to how bright you would like the lamp to be. Other balance arm lamps use fluorescent bulbs which throw more of a white warm light, are more energy efficient and last longer than incandescent bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs typically require about one quarter of the energy than incandescent bulbs do, and also produce 75% less heat. Many balance arm lamps use a 13w PL fluorescent bulb, which is equivalent to 55 watts of incandescent light.
Some balance arm lamps have a double adjustable arm, which allows you to adjust both the height and the extension of the arm. This is important for fine-tuning the placement of the shade. Also, the shades swivel to further direct the light, making these one of the most flexible lamp choices for pianos. Other balance arm lamps have a stationary arm where the extension or reach of the lamp is stationary, but the height of the arm remains adjustable and the shade also rotates.
You should consider the differences between the two arm types when making a decision to purchase a balance arm lamp. Both arm types allow for focused light on the music. The stationary arm works great if you have room to move the base of the lamp back and forth so that the shade is positioned directly over the music. (This lamp works better on an upright piano). Double adjustment balance arm lamps are better if you have limited space in which to place the lamp as on a Grand Piano. The adjustment arm allows you more flexibility in lamp placement because the arm can be adjusted to extend or retract which helps position the shade directly over the music. If you use a stationary arm balance lamp on a grand piano, the shade may either over-shoot or fall short of the sheet music. With the double adjustment type, you can move the arm to put the shade exactly where you want it. In a nutshell, balance arm lamps with a stationary arm are better used for upright pianos, and balance lamps with a double adjustment arm work better on grand pianos.
All balance arm lamps have 10” shades that encircle the bulb and rotate, which helps to focus the light on specific areas. The arms have a height adjustment range from 0” to 26” depending on the model chosen. The on/off switch is conveniently located either on the front of the base or on the socket for easy access. These lamps have a solid weighted square or round base, which keeps the lamp solid on the piano at any extension of the arm, without the possibility of tipping the lamp. Extending the arm even to full length will not cause the lamp to be thrown off balance.
Balance arm piano lamps are so versatile that they can easily be used in other areas of the home or office. They function well as a nightstand light for reading, on desk and table- tops, in studios and in many other areas. They are also lightweight and portable, so they come in handy for musicians and others who travel to performance venues, rehearsals, churches, schools, etc.
House of Troy Lighting has a great selection of handcrafted balance arm lamps. You can choose from contemporary and traditional styles, antique finishes, crystal and brass models, polished brass and marble designs, and other styles and finishes.

Grand Piano Clip-On/Clamp Lamps
Proper lighting is essential when playing or practicing the piano. Piano Lamps are specially designed to allow for flexibility in directing the light exactly where you need it, on the music and the piano keys. The piano lamps by House of Troy are engineered with musicians in mind. They are solidly built, offer flexibility in directing light, come in many models, styles, and designs, and many are lightweight and portable, allowing musicians to transport them to performances and rehearsals.
Grand piano lamps come in different variations, offering musicians a choice as to where to place the lamp on the piano. The most popular style is the grand piano clamp lamp or clip-on style lamp. This type of lamp clamps onto the sheet-music holder (music desk) with small thumbscrews to hold it in place. The inside of the clamp is lined with felt to protect the piano from being scratched. The on/off switch is conveniently located either in the cord (6" from the clamp) or on the shade itself for easy access.
The width of sheet music and music books usually ranges from 12" - 18". The shade sizes of grand clamp lamps range from 10" to 22" allowing them to provide a wide enough dispersion of light to cover the entire width of an open music book. The shades of these lamps swivel to help fine-tune the light directly onto the music and keys. The flexible shades also cut out glare associated with light by keeping the light from shining directly into your eyes.
One of the advantages of the clip-on style grand piano lamp is that the light is directly on top of the music, shining straight down upon it, illuminating the music and the keys. Another advantage is that the lamp is not resting on the piano taking up room, which allows you to put other things on the piano such as metronomes, music books, and other items. And still another advantage is that these lamps are lightweight and portable, so they can be transported to rehearsals and performances. They also work on music stands, and in any other areas that they could be clamped onto.
These clamp style lamps are available with different types of lighting technology giving musicians even more choices. Some use incandescent lighting, while others use fluorescent bulbs, and still others use LED lighting technology. They all provide plenty of light to clearly read your sheet music or music book, and they reduce eye-strain associated with improper focused lighting. Led grand piano lamps have become very popular lately because of their energy efficiency and long lasting bulb life.
House of Troy makes these lamps in a number of beautiful designs including wide shade styles, thin-line models, low profile lamps, and even a battery operated model. They are available in various finishes including: Polished Brass, Black, Mahogany Bronze, Satin Nickel, and in various combinations of these finishes. These attractive piano lamps will not only light up your piano by providing the proper focused light, but they will also make your piano look classy and stylish, and help to connect it to the decor of the room.

LED PIANO LAMPS
An LED (Light Emitting Diode) is a semiconductor that converts electricity into light. LED Lighting has been around since the 1960’s. In recent years LED technology has made great strides in high efficiency, low heat, high output, safe and environmentally friendly lighting. Because of their many great qualities, LED Piano Lamps have become one of the most desired lighting sources for use on pianos and music stands, and for musicians in general.
LED Piano Lamps are considerably more efficient than incandescent bulbs, they do not product heat, and give off a warm white light with no glare, making them perfect for reading music. They also last much longer than incandescent lamps. The life span of an LED Lamp ranges from 20,000 to 50,000 hours compared to 1000-2000 hours for incandescent bulbs. To put this in perspective, if you use your LED Lamp for 2 hours per day, the light will last from 27-68 years!
LED Piano Lamps do not use regular light bulbs. They use tiny semi-conductors encapsulated in plastic, which protect their components and help focus the light. They do not have a filament like regular light bulbs, making them more resistant to thermal and vibration shocks, so they will not break when being transported. Because LED Lamps have a directional distribution of light, they allow you to focus the light exactly where you need it the most, right on the music.
LED’s typically use 5-15% of the energy of incandescent lighting. LED savings are found over the life of the LED in energy consumption. For example, a 3.5 watt LED replaces a 40 watt incandescent bulb and lasts 30,000 hours. The savings of 36 watts times 30,000 hours equals 1,080 Kwh (kilowatt hours). At an average $0.11 per Kwh the savings is calculated at $118.80. This number does not include the cost of the 15-30 replacement bulbs (over the life of the LED) needed for incandescent lighting. In addition, by saving energy we are helping to protect our environment.

Piano lamps are specifically designed to shed focused light on music, reading material, or any other work. They have long shades that encircle the bulbs so that the light projects from one concentrated area. Most piano lamps have shades that swivel and adjustable arms so that you can further fine-tune the direction of the light.
Lamps for pianos come with a light switch to turn the lamp on and off. Some switches are located on the base of the lamp, some on the shade, and others in the power cord close to the lamp. All switch locations are conveniently located for easy access.
These Lamps are made to work best with specific piano types. There are lamp styles that work better on Grand Pianos such as clip-on lamps that clamp to the music desk (lined with felt so they will not scratch), and others that work better on Upright Pianos like lamps with a solid base. Some piano lamps, such as Balance Arm Lamps or Floor Lamps are versatile enough to work for any type of piano. Also available are battery-operated lamps, which work on pianos and music stands and are great for transporting. These lamps also come in handy when access to an electrical outlet is limited or non-existing.
Piano lamps can also be used in other areas of the home or office. They are solidly built and durable, but light enough to be transported from place to place.
Piano lamp technology has taken a step into the future with energy efficient LED lamps that not only save energy, but produce light from 20,000 - 100,000 hours on a single LED array (bulb). These lamps emit a warm white non-glare light. They have become popular for their energy efficiency and for their slim attractive design.
Piano lamps come in many different styles and designs so there is plenty of variety when looking to purchase a lamp. Some of the more popular finishes are: Polished Brass, Antique Brass, Black, Oil Rubbed Mahogany, Satin Nickel, and Chrome. Many lamps have a combination of the above finishes adding to their style and attractiveness.

Piano Placement in the Home
Where you place your piano is a key factor in preserving and protecting your instrument. Use the following guidelines to help you figure out the best spot for your piano.
A piano should never be placed near a heat/air cond. source (radiator, vent, etc.). This is the worst place for your piano. Try to avoid this at all costs. If there is really no other place to put your piano, then you have to take the necessary steps to stop the heat from coming out of that radiator or vent. (turn off radiator/close and cover the vent).
You should also try to try to avoid placing your piano on an outside wall or near windows. Outside Walls transfer the outside climate to the indoors and the effect is greatest on the inside of that wall. Windows allow sunlight to shine on your piano which will fade the finish, (although this usually takes a number of years-but you don't want this to ever happen).
The best place for your piano is on an inside wall away from any heat/air cond. source and out of direct sunlight.
Of course in some homes, the piano owner doesn't have many good options and consequently the piano ends up either near a vent, on an outside wall or in front of a window with the sun shining on it.
For those who find themselves in this position, its important to know that the heat/air cond. source is the worst. If you have a choice between placing it in front of the heating vent or on an outside wall, choose the outside wall. You can always line the back of the piano with insulation if you are having problems. If you have no choice but to place your piano in front of a window, you could purchase a piano cover to protect the finish.
Stay tuned to my blog for more info on this and many other piano related topics.

How to choose a piano bench - the next phase
After deciding on either a fixed height piano bench (non-adjustable) or an adjustabe bench, you then have to decide if you would like a wood top bench or a bench with an upholstered top. But this is only an issue if you have chosen a fixed height bench, since all of the adjustable benches I have ever seen have an upolstered top.
The upholstered benches are obviously more comfortable for the player, but if you choose a wood top bench, you can always purchase a piano bench cushion for added comfort.
Some folks like the look of the wood top bench, and some players actually prefer the way a wood top bench feels. It really is a personal choice, but at least now you know the options when it comes to comfort. Stay tuned to my blog for the next entry about choosing a piano bench.
If you would like to see a nice selection of piano benches including all of the above styles, please visit: Pianoscomplete.com
Thanks, Rick

How to choose a piano bench
The first thing to decide when looking to purchase a piano bench is whether you would like a fixed height piano bench or an adjustable one. To some this is simply a personal choice, but to those who are not sure, here is what you need to know.
A fixed height bench does not have the ability to be adjusted up and down. They do come in different sizes, usually from 19" to 22" in height, so when you choose, make sure you choose carefully.
An adjustable height bench allows you the flexibility to change the height of the bench. This is very convenient if you have more than one piano player using the bench, or if you have children who are studying piano, since the height can be adjusted as they grow through the years.
Stay tuned to my blog for more on choosing a piano bench.

Piano Caster Cups
Piano caster cups are a great way to protect your wood floor, carpet, or tile from developing dents and holes due to the uneven distribution of weight of your piano and the casters (wheels) which rest directly on the floor causing damage to the floor. They will also help to steady a piano that rocks due to uneven flooring.
Caster cups come in various colors, sizes, and finishes (satin or high gloss), to match virtually any piano, and can be purchased individually or in sets. They are available in hardwood, plastic and lucite and are durable and strong.

Grand Piano Lamps: How do i choose among the many styles and models.
The first decision you should make when looking to purchase a lamp for your grand piano, is to choose between the two basic styles, that is: Grand Piano Lamps that clamp onto the music shelf, or Counter Balance Lamps that sits on the side of the music shelf and has a long adjustable arm that reaches over to the music.
Once you have decided between the two basic lamp styles, the next consideration is how much light do you want the lamp to produce. Most piano lamps provide plenty of light to clearly read the music, but some folks like more wattage and others like a little less. 40-60 watts is usually plenty of light, but you can get up to 120 watts if you like.
Also, different styles of lamps use different bulbs. Some use T10 bulbs which usually come in either 40w or 60w and throw more of a standard yellowish type of light, similar to that of a regular light bulb used in the home. Other lamps use flourescent bulbs which throw a whiter type of light. And still others use LED lighting technology with very long bulb life (20,000 - 100,000 hours). These lamps throw a warm white light with no glare.

Things to consider when buying a piano lamp.
Here are some things to consider when buying a piano lamp for a grand piano. First, determine what type of lamp best fits your needs. There are grand piano lamps that clip onto the music desk (music holder). These lamps allow the light to shine directly on the music from above. Some of them take flourescent bulbs and others are LED lamps. Other lamps that work for grand pianos are counter balance lamps, which sit to one side of the piano and have a long arm that reaches over to the music. These lamps also work well. Both types provide plenty of focused light. Another choice would be a floor lamp with a long arm that reaches over and throws the light directly onto the music.
LED piano lamps are a great choice because they are eneregy efficient while providing long lasting (20,000 - 30,000 hours) light with no glare.
You also need to consider style, design and color when you make your choice. There are quite a variety of styles and models to choose from. Remember, the color does not necessarily have to be same color as your piano. For example, a polished brass piano lamp goes nicely with a black piano.
All House of Troy Piano Lamps provide plenty of light to clearly see your music. These lamps are all very flexible as far as directing the light where you need it. Most of them have adjustable arms and shades that swivel, so you can fine tune the direction that the light shines.

Humidity Control
By far the most important factor in keeping your piano in tune and otherwise protecting it for the long haul is to control the changes in relative humidity that the piano is exposed to.
A piano is made mostly of wood. Wood reacts to both dryness and excess moisture. The humidity level surrounding your piano needs to be controlled in order for your piano to stay relatively in tune and to avoid problems in the years to come.

Happy Mother's Day.
As a brand new blogger, i told my family at a gathering for mother's day that i joined blogger.com. A conversation started among us, and we looked over and my father had fallen asleep. We all started cracking up - guess he wasn't too interested in learning about blogging. (he's 84).
Anyway, this is rick from Pianoscomplete.com, where you can view a nice selection of piano accessories including, benches, piano lamps, bench cushions and more.
My website is a new site, so i am trying to let people know that i exist. I am also interested in any sort of feedback about my site, or about piano accessories in general.
Does anyone have any questions about any accessory they might need for their piano?
I would be happy to help you, even if you just need advice.
Have a great day!
Rick

Hi everyone,
This is my 2nd blog (i promise i won't count each one after this).
I have been a professional musician for 40 years (started when i was very young). Now i am a professional piano technician and i own a website called Pianoscomplete.com
On the website i sell piano benches, piano lamps, metronomes, cushions for piano benches, and many other piano accessories.
As a piano technician, i am very familiar with accessories for the piano. I know my products really well.
I would be interested to hear from others who have either questions or comments and ideas about any piano accessories. For example: What is your favorite piano bench and why? Who do you think makes the nicest piano lamps? etc.
thanks - Rick
